Condom shortage fears in Uganda

30/06/2010

A call is being made for more condoms to be sent to Uganda to deal with a shortage.

PlusNews Global reported that several areas in the country have now run out supplies.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health said that delivery of condoms is not predictable and that they take a long time to obtain.

The British and American governments are among the bodies making donations to Uganda to relieve the shortage.

But one Kampala resident told the news source that such problems are common and sex workers have also complained that they are being put at risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Privately bought condoms cost up to $2 (£1.33) for three sheaths.

Earlier this month, Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni told New Vision that the country is largely self-reliant now and is enjoying a fast-growing economy.

He predicted that certain projects, such as building new roads, will be completed without having to take in money from outside.
