More poor in India than whole of sub-Saharan Africa

There are more people living in poverty in India than in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa, a new survey has found.
According to researchers at Oxford University, there are more than 410 million poor living in the eight states of India than in the 26 countries which make up sub-Saharan Africa - and as well as this, many of the poor who reside in India are dealing with much more desolate levels of poverty than those living in Africa.
To come up with the results, the team at Oxford compared poverty levels in areas of similar size and population, such as the state of Madhya Pradesh in India and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Around 70 million people live in the Indian region and 62 million live in the African state and the two areas were found to have almost totally identical poverty levels.
The findings will be used in the United Nations Human Development Report, set to be published later this year.
Around two thirds of people suffering from HIV or AIDs live in the sub-Saharan region of Africa, figures recently showed.
