'Numerous approaches' needed to fight AIDS
26/07/2010
Putting in place multiple techniques in the fight against AIDS is the only way of tackling the condition, it has been claimed.
According to an editorial piece on the San Francisco Chronicle's website, three decades of fighting against the virus has "shown that no single answer" is available. A "battery of responses" is needed to tackle the illness said the writer, who also noted that should a cure one day be found, there would still "33 million and counting" already living with the disease.
The piece called the creation of a new vaginal gel designed to be used during sex as "significant".
"The virus can still be passed along by needle use and male-to-male sex, but women - who are most at risk in African countries where AIDS rates run highest - now have at least a partial defence," it said.
Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rate of AIDS and HIV in the world, with more than 22 million people there infected with the conditions.
