Support

Daniel Koroma (Sierra Leone - Secure livelihoods)

We will help you throughout your entire volunteer journey with a comprehensive training and support package.

We recognize the important commitment volunteers make in choosing to serve overseas. All approved CUSO-VSO volunteers are matched with a volunteer advisor, their main point of contact with the organization before their overseas placement. Volunteer advisors work with accepted applicants as they prepare for overseas placements.

The volunteer advisors also work with international staff to help identify suitable placements. While you’ll interact with other CUSO-VSO staff to plan your training and travel arrangements, your volunteer advisor is the main contact who can help you navigate processes and answer questions as you prepare to head overseas.

Financial package

Our financial support package covers the costs of being an overseas volunteer, allowing you to enjoy a modest but healthy lifestyle as you volunteer abroad.

While specific terms and conditions are available upon request, overseas volunteers can generally expect to receive the following financial support:

  • Attendance at a CUSO-VSO assessment day (candidates must cover the first $150 of the most cost-effective travel expenses and accommodation costs).

  • Travel and accommodation costs associated with pre-departure training.

  • Return airfare and visa/permit (this includes a return flight in the case of a family emergency).

  • Coverage for required vaccinations, medications and comprehensive health insurance.

  • Accommodation while overseas.

  • A modest living allowance, which varies depending on the country where you are placed.

  • Quarterly payments to support you in your placement

Support at home and abroad

While overseas

Once overseas, your local VSO office will meet you on your arrival and organize further training. Your most regular contact will be with your employer, which is CUSO-VSO’s local partner organization. However, your local VSO office will help you with any major personal, medical or security problems.

Returning home

After completing your posting, we offer different ways to support returned volunteers in reintegrating to life in North America.

We can also support you in continuing to be involved in international development. Learn more about our public engagement program and the ongoing activities happening near you.
